Going Bald

I am the mother of a 5 year old fawn pug. Just recently my pug's hair under his neck has begun to fall out and his neck to turn black. This has just happened within the past few months. The vet told me it was just because he was getting old. I have seen old pugs before and they are not going bald on their necks (which is now spreading all under his belly and up to his shoulders). His belly is almost completely black now...almost like it is dirty but he gets at least 2 baths a week. The hair on his back is fine but I want to figure this out before he starts going bald on his back also. Plus it is happening on his feet too...which he seems to be biting constantly these days. Could it be mites? mange? Any advice for me???

I am certainly no vet so I don't know exactly- but I've heard that you should not bathe your dog more than once or twice a month. Maybe the hair is falling out due to over-bathing? I would also try a milder shampoo

I have a eight year old Pug, and have never heard of this. She is starting to gray in her face. I would take your pug to another vet. It could be a allergy. It would not hurt to get another opinion.

Let us know what the diagnosis is.
I had an 8 yr old adult black female pug that had food allergies.
Her belly changed colors from pink to black, until I found a food that worked for her.
None of my pugs ever lost their hair. My oldest senior foster pug is 15 yrs old. -

I took him to the vet. The vet said he just has really bad allergies. He is on antibiotics and they have changed his food. He is getting some better since being on the medicine for 3 weeks. We go back to the vet on Thursday for a check-up and more medicine. They said if this doesn't work...they will have to put him on steroids. Hope things get better!!!

My poor Molly just started loosing her hair a couple of weeks ago. It started around her neck, under her collar. I looked closer and say that she had several ticks on her!! Apparently her frontline was off schedule :( Well, I got the ticks off her. She seemed fine (maybe a little nausia) Not she is loosing hair on her belly and it is turning black too! She is nursing 6 puppies...I thought maybe they were just rubbing it off her stomach.
Could the tick bites on her neck be causing the hairloss on her belly as well?? -

Hmm this is interesting. You should take Molly to the vet just to make sure everything is ok!

One of my pugs is almost 13 and she has never lost any hair. She did get black on her stomach and my vet had my change her food. She is on Science Diet for sensative skin. It has help so much. Please try to stay away from Steroids, she is much to young for that. I would try another vet for a second opinion.

One of our pugs has this problem. She hasn't lost hair on her neck but in her armpits and her stomach, and everything turns black. We were told it was allergies. What we do is clean under her arms really well and put some glycerine or something like it on the black parts. It comes and goes.
