Hi All,
I adopted a 2 year old pug about 4 months back and, although I was told otherwise, she is completely and utterly NOT housebroken. I've been crate training her since we got her. So long as we keep her on a schedule she does fine. But if I don't deliberately take her outside and stand next to her every five hours, she will go on the carpet. Seems the problem is that she doesn't understand that she needs to tell us to open the door. I tried training her to use a bell but after four months, I'm exhausted. anyone have any solutions beyond, "be consistent"? Please tell me that she will get it some day!

My male pugs didn't always like to "tell" me when they needed out. My solution was a dog door. Oscar is my rescue pug. He was 5 when I got him and had lived most of that time in a garage, so he wasn't exactly housebroken either. They all got the hang of the door pretty fast. A few treats didn't hurt either! I think they knew they wanted to "go" in the grass, they just didn't understand how to get the door open, and with the doggy door the it removed that step altogether.
Good luck!

Baxter paces and looks frantic when he has to go outside, but Sofia isn't as obvious. Have you read about "Schedule Based Training"? It helps your pug get in a routine and then she may hold it because she knows her schedule. May help..
Also, here is an article for more tips for potty training.
Good luck!!
